I build my last pc in 2016 so although I upgraded it some I'm out of the loop on the new offerings.
This pc is for 1440 gaming and also for work. It will be dual boot win 11 and linux.
In gaming, the most important for me is a locked, really locked 60fps (maybe a bit more depending on the new monitor I'm getting later). I'm stepping up to 1440 now, and it seems the 3080 can handle that. I'd go one step up in the GPU, but they are really expensive now and I probably won't be doing any 4K gaming (I'm ooold and can't see the pixels anymore hehe). In any case any suggestions here are appreciated. Do I have better options now for better GPUs without paying too much more? Or maybe a lot more but with a great value?
My main concerns are: Is the Motherboard OK? Do I need a z790 chipset? Does it offer significant advantages in my case? Could I go with a z690 instead? What about the actual motherboard choice I made (Gigabyte z790 gaming X AX)? Is that a good choice? I'd like to play a bit with overclocking, but nothing too aggressive. Also, is the 850W power supply OK if I want to upgrade later on (say a RTX4090 and more HDD drives)? Also, I chose the processor for the cores and "supposed" speed. Could I have chosen a i5-13600KF without much impact in performance? What about 12th generation? Is it better value now? Regarding work I do most of the heavy computing in clusters, but it's nice to have the option to do some quick tests at home, and also for data analysis, which also need some punch.
Should I go straight to 64 GB RAM? This looks like overkill to me now, but could be handy for work (memory leaks). Is the RAM speed OK? A long time ago one used to match that with the CPU, is that still the case? I chose the 2nd slowest one. In the past the difference in general performance was small.
The 2 ssds are for the 2 operating systems. I chose the evo plus for the gaming one, but does that make a significant change in speed or could I save a little here? The second ssh is cheaper, but should be enough for the linux stuff. The HDD is for data storage.
Anything else I missed? The case? I was going for a corsair water cooler (for the K in the processor!) but it doesn't fit, so I went with air instead. Having a DVD would be nice (I have a large dvd/blue ray collection at home), but it doesn't fit (no bays). The other ones with bays are too small for the 3080.
